  Presenter:   Rob Willis
Area Vice President – Australia and New Zealand, Citrix Systems
Audience:   This session is ideal for IT Directors and IT Executives, Application Administrators, Data Centre Administrators, Network Managers, IT Managers, IT Administrators, Desktop Managers, Corporate Executives, IT Systems Integrators, and industry analysts & media.
Abstract:   Twice as many Australian businesses are using Virtualisation than the rest of the world today. Virtualisation is transforming IT operations by reducing costs through higher resource utilisation and reducing risk through increased operational flexibility. However, server virtualisation makes storage management more complex and in many cases does not support capabilities available today in physical environments. Current x86 virtualisation solutions have tried to solve this problem using a file system-based approach, but this architecture forces users to give up many of the advanced storage management capabilities they rely on today.

Customers are increasingly recognising the enhanced openness and scalability of the Citrix XenServer virtualisation platform. Discover how including XenServer as an integral component of Veritas Virtual Infrastructure will allow users to fully benefit from server virtualisation while both preserving current best practices in storage management from the physical environment and leveraging new opportunities provided by virtualised environments. As a result, you can accelerate plans to deploy virtualisation across heterogeneous enterprise environments knowing that you have a robust and highly flexible solution upon which to build a dynamic data centre.

  Presenter:   Paul Kastner
Director - Industry Solutions, Asia Pacific & Japan, Symantec
Audience:   This session has been especially developed for decision makers in charge of risk management, compliance, business continuity and IT areas.
Abstract:   With operational and IT outsourcing entering a new phase of multi-sourcing arrangements, and with more focus on offshore operations, the potential for Australian businesses to take on unmanaged risk is getting greater. Properly securing outsourced and offshore operations is a critical business need.

The issue is: how do businesses manage security policies, auditing, monitoring, reporting, and enforcement in all their diverse external environments to the same level as in their main Australian locations?

What’s needed is a framework for security management and compliance that is equally applicable for all locations, whether outsourced or not. Implementing such a solution is not simple, but as operational complexity grows, it is becoming a necessity.

This presentation seeks to provide an overview of the risks and the way forward toward better security management and compliance in the new outsourced and offshore world.

Most companies are prepared to protect their data through the use of high availability and disaster recovery processes and services. However in the event of a failure, they may be prepared to resume its IT operations, but may not be prepared to resume business operations. The ability to recover the business in an appropriate and timely manner can ultimately mean the difference between survival and failure.

  Presenter:   Kenton A. Hoover
Senior Manager, Solutions, Symantec Global Services
Audience:   This session has been especially developed for strategic decision makers, including CIOs and other senior executives, in charge of IT security, risk management, and other IT areas.
Abstract:   Few firms will claim less than “six sigma” security protection, but companies do not treat security as a core competency as it is not viewed as a driver of their success. As long as that is the case, firms are not willing to make the required investments because they cannot see anything in security apart from increased operational expense.

We argue that as with any enterprise undertaking, the company must choose areas of security focus, and offer a model for how firms can optimise their expenses between the different areas of security in accordance with their risk tolerance. This will allow firms to determine which parts of their security investment plays to their core attributes and aspirations.

  Presenter:   Tim Harlow
Executive Manager, BT Infrastructure Hosting, Suncorp-Metway Limited
Audience:   This session has been developed for technology professionals, senior technology professionals and C-level technology professionals.
Abstract:   The key to deriving maximum value from information assets lies in the fundamental approach taken by organisations in regard to both information and data management. There is a distinct differentiation between the two, and successful achievement of the goal transcends pure technology, storage and data management itself.

An enterprise-wide approach to the technology used deliver the underlying functionality and tools enables organisations to effectively manage storage capacity and enable fast and easy access to their data.

Ensuring that storage utilisation is maximised across heterogeneous operating systems will improve service levels , reduce capital and operating costs, improve data management and retrieval and ensure that information recovery is enabled quickly and efficiently.

This discussion explores and compares the traditional and emerging problem-solving approaches that can be used to address this challenge first at a thought or strategy level, then at the technology level. It then relates them to the specific technologies of Storage Management, Backup, Recovery and Archiving and the ways in which these can be applied to address organisational information management goals.

  Presenter:   Paul Kastner
Director - Industry Solutions, Asia Pacific & Japan, Symantec
Audience:   This session has been developed for C-level and strategic IT professionals.
Abstract:   Due to ever-larger data centres, evermore endpoints, and driven by the rapid rise in oil prices, energy costs are becoming a major concern for CIOs. If they are not already, at current rates of growth, energy costs will soon be the second-highest operational expense for running an enterprise data centre, after people costs. In addition, and often overlooked, PCs and other endpoint devices account for over half of all CO2 emissions form IT devices.

With the government weighing in with prospective carbon trading schemes, and with energy costs showing no signs of significant decline, the issue for IT is: how can we maximise our energy efficiency, thereby both saving costs and protecting the environment.

What’s needed is a multi-pronged approach to the Greening of IT, with software playing a leading part in improving overall IT asset efficiency and energy usage. Acting on this important issue now will save money, satisfy potential regulatory mandates, and help serve the community.

This presentation seeks to provide an overview of how companies can use software to help green their IT.

Lead Principal - Consulting Services, Symantec Australia
Audience:   This session has been especially developed for decision makers in charge of risk management, compliance, business continuity and IT areas.
Abstract:   Disasters and security breaches can strike anyone at anytime and anywhere. Whether they are natural or man-made disasters or malicious threats, the resulting downtime can seriously impact the viability of your business.

Both direct and indirect costs of downtime to your business include data loss, decreased employee productivity, compromised customer loyalty and a reduction in profits and revenue.

Most companies are prepared to protect their data through the use of high availability and disaster recovery processes and services. However in the event of a failure, they may be prepared to resume its IT operations, but may not be prepared to resume business operations.   Presenter:   Kenton A. Hoover
Senior Manager, Solutions, Symantec Global Services

Steve Simpson
Principal Security Consultant, Business Advisory Services, Symantec Australia
Audience:   This session is suitable for all audiences, but particularly anyone who works in the area of security or policy, and for any sized organisation.
Abstract:   Symantec communicates our detailed knowledge and ongoing experience of enterprise threats through our Internet Security Threat Report, the IT Risk Management Reports and our real-time DeepSight services. The internet provides a plethora of other sources of information, in the form of blogs from security researchers, professional mailing lists, and (perhaps less) helpful "emergency email warnings" from employees.

Any general threat to an enterprise will have a different impact depending on the nature of the business itself, requiring each threat to be individually analyzed to determine potential impact. This process is complicated by third-party obligations, such as PCI, where higher priorities are often arbitrarily mandated. It requires a tremendous investment in staff time to both understand the nuances of the enterprise well enough to rate the threat and then to assign these ratings against the large number of potential threats that are constantly emerging. Even when this investment is made, senior leadership frequently has a different expectation about which risks and mitigation measures are acceptable.

We discuss these issues, present a general taxonomy of threats and discussion of how they present within the enterprise and will offer a few ideas for how professionals can better manage security within the dynamic enterprise environment.

Paul Wilcox
Specialist – Security and Data Management, Symantec Australia
Audience:   This session is aimed at C-level and strategic executives working in IT, Legal and Finance, as well as all staff responsible for risk, security and compliance management.
Abstract:   As the security, compliance and IT risk management challenges increase, Symantec customers are moving towards a more strategic direction in designing, managing and auditing their security and risk frameworks.

Organisations need to ensure they have policies in place that speak to the control objectives in best practices/regulations/frameworks they are trying to comply with, whether internal or external. They also wish to provide evidence of compliance to auditors in a timely and efficient manner. And the ever-growing need to become more efficient means organisations need to do this while minimising internal and external labour costs.

This session gives both a business and technical overview of Symantec Control Compliance Suite, and in particular the upcoming release of Control Compliance Suite 9.0. Through the use of case studies, we will explore how Symantec customers in Australia have deployed this solution to overcome the challenges faced, using a strategic, automated framework to manage their governance, risk, compliance and security posture.
